A FAST launch can look ready in every department and still fail on air. Programming has a complete schedule. Traffic has commercial instructions. Playout has media. Yet the channel launches with gaps, incorrect breaks, missing episodes, or ads in the wrong places.

The problem is usually not that one team failed. It is that each team completed its own work using a different definition of “ready.”

Three systems, three versions of the channel

Scheduling thinks in programs, episodes, clocks, and effective dates. Traffic thinks in inventory, break structures, advertiser rules, and revenue. Playout thinks in media IDs, durations, secondary events, triggers, and files that can actually be aired.

The channel exists only when those three versions agree. A schedule that cannot be translated into a valid log is not launch-ready. A log that references unavailable media is not launch-ready. A playlist that airs but cannot support the promised advertising model is not commercially ready.

Where the handoffs fail

  • Program and episode identifiers change between systems.
  • Break durations in the format do not match the inventory traffic is selling.
  • Last-minute schedule revisions never reach the downstream log.
  • Time-zone, daylight-saving, or broadcast-day rules are interpreted differently.
  • Media is technically present but named, segmented, or versioned differently than expected.
  • No one owns the final comparison of schedule, log, playlist, and delivered assets.
The warning sign

If every department can say “my part is complete” while no one can show that the full channel chain reconciles, the launch is still exposed.

Test the operating model, not just the signal

A successful confidence test should follow representative content through the entire path: long-form, short-form, unusual durations, schedule changes, makegoods, missing material, and live or near-live exceptions. It should also prove who makes each decision when the normal path breaks.

The best launch checklist is not merely a list of system tests. It is a list of cross-functional outcomes: the correct event aired, the intended inventory remained available, the expected metadata reached distribution, and each exception had a clear owner.

FAST channels fail in the seams. Launch readiness improves when those seams are treated as part of the product—not as someone else’s handoff.
